.torrent - Now I get it!

Jul 18 2005

Previously the whole P2P music download revolution – as personified by Napster, Soulseek, et al – had kind of passed me by.

I’m an old-fashioned kind of a guy, I like my CDs to come in a nice box with a little booklet I can flip through and a nice design on the cover; and I also tend to think that the artists deserve to be recompensed for creating the work I am enjoying. Yes, I am aware of all the arguments surrounding artificially increased prices and nasty working practices by the mega-corp music producer companies, and I have more than my fair share of knackered old pirated tapes from my youth, but nowadays my music consumption has decidedly slowed (due in part to a lack of opportunity to listen to the music I want to – we’re more likely to have “Little Peter Rabbit Had A Fly Upon His Nose” on these days than anything a normal person might actually want to listen to 20 times a day…)

Anyway, I finally decided to see what all the fuss was about and downloaded a .torrent program and did a little surfing – and Jeebus is there a lot of ‘free’ music out there! I’ve also discovered that it is the perfect way to recapture my lost youth and own again a lot of albums that have been lost among several house moves and changes in taste.

Of course, first on the bill had to be the ultimate in music-sharing naysayers:

Now all I need is an iPod… ;)

Great! But just don’t get too carried away. It may start out with music, but you will eventually go onto TV Shows and then maybe movies ;)

Using Torrents for TV Shows is awesome.

I doubt it – we barely have enough spare time to watch shows that are on normal TV, let alone extra ones we’ve downloaded!

At least with music I have a few hours a week in the car to further damage my hearing… ;)

I know what you mean, listening to the Disney CD every time the little person needs to go to sleep is a pain.
Suddenly you want to hurt the little creatures you held so dear in your own childhood…
Master of Puppets is a great album. Probably the best Metallica album actually.

I think my husband thanks God every day that there is no easily installed .torrent program for OS9, because I’d probably be a menace.

My wife had a thing about Placebo a few years back. She decided to hoover up all the hard to find b-sides etc from all over the internet.
The pc was totally minging with trojans and diallers after a while.

Never tried the old file sharing either, always a bit scared I’d get sued.
