Our Facebook application - friend finder for hotels

At the day job we’ve just launched a little side-project. Stay Together is a Facebook application that mashes up the existing Events data with Google Maps and our own worldwide hotels database, to let you find and book accommodation near where your event is taking place.

I’m only posting this because I have nothing interesting to say at the moment. I’ll be at the Refresh get-together, various EllisLab events, the bowling, the Great British Booze-Up, and SXNW. And I might even make it to a few sessions and panels as well.

XFN, relationship minefield

Although I’ve been aware of the XHTML Friends Network microformat, XFN, for some time—and was only recently reading about its genesis in John Allsop’s Microformats book—I’ve not previously had the need to use them. This site lost its blogroll somewhere around the second design iteration, and client work doesn’t offer very many opportunities to tag your nearest and dearest, so my first real hands-on experience came courtesy of this year’s dConstruct backnetwork, “the online space for d.construct 07 delegates”.

BarCamp comes to Cambridge

Come Friday, I’ll be heading down to the inaugural Cambridge BarCamp, where we’ll “talk, demonstrate and discuss topics at the interface between science and technology”; well, I won’t, as I know next to nothing about science, but I’ll be talking about Refresh in the city, partaking of the free lunch, and generally mingling with other local geeks.

SXSW, Day 0

Our motel—straight out of My Name Is Earl, complete with tiny pool right next to the interstate—has a 24-hour diner right next door, so we’re sorted for breakfast at least.
Waitress: So, are you guys in for South By Southwest?
Me: That’s right.
Waitress: You’re in pretty early, it doesn’t start till Wednesday.
Me: No, that’s the music festival.
Waitress: Ah, you’re here for the film one?
Me: No…
Waitress: Oh, right—you’re GeekPeople.
