1001s

A couple of 1001 lists have been knocking about the internet recently. 1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die and 1001 Books You Must Read Before You Die (list here) both demand you waste the best part of an hour scrutinising and checking off your own consumption.

How to disable visual voicemail on the iPhone for UK users

Filed under General, Technology on 4.03.08

As I prepare to jet off for a week in Texas at SXSW, one of the things on my ‘to do’ list was “figure out how to disable visual voicemail on the iPhone”. I wasn’t too keen on the idea of getting stung with a massive phone bill for downloading messages on a roaming tariff—but according to the internet, the only way to disable the service seems to be setting a password and then resetting the phone (so the phone effectively can’t remember how to connect to the voicemail service).

Selflessness

Here’s a question for all web designer/developer types.

If you worked in a different profession—let’s say you’re a plumber, maybe, or an accountant—would you still spend your free time writing articles to help your competitors understand new techniques; organising conferences or local networking communities to share best practices; and generally doing your best to help everyone else in the industry be better?

An easy way to perform a recursive CVS add

cvs add myproject/*/*/*/*
cvs add myproject/*/*/*/*/*

Rinse and repeat until you run out of sub-folders.

Overheard in Amsterdam, an English man on his mobile phone:

Where are you? I’m by the river, where are you?

Maybe it’s just me, but in a city with well over a thousand miles of canals, ‘by the river’ is not the most specific place to agree to meet…

Pink for October

Filed under General, The Site on 2.10.06

Like a bunch of other designers that I can’t be bothered to find links for, I’ve gone pink for october in support of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. It took about 2 minutes, and I don’t care that the brown clashes. :)

IE Conditional Comments not working? Check IE7.bat

Filed under General, Technology on 1.09.06

Recently I’ve been having all sorts of problems getting my standalone versions of Internet Explorer (5, 5.5, 6 and 7) to work correctly.

I use IE conditional comments to deliver ‘fix’ stylesheets to those browsers, but I was finding that IE was just ignoring anything inside the conditional comments. Fed up with this, today I have finally tracked down and fixed the problem.

Mentioned in passing on Jeff’s accessibility article, Apple+Option+Ctrl+8 will reverse the colours of your entire monitor – makes reading Dustin Diaz’s site a bit easier…
