8 Random Things
Filed under Memes, Personal on 11.10.07
I got hit with the Random Things meme a while ago by Vero, but have been putting it off since then, but I feel like writing something today, so here goes…
The Rules
- You have to post these rules before giving you the facts.
- Players state eight random facts/habits about themselves.
- At the end of the blog post, you tag eight people and list their names. (Don’t forget to leave them a comment telling them they’re tagged, and to read your blog.)
- People who are tagged need to write about their eight things on their own blog and also post these rules.
My 8 Random Things
- I’m entirely unqualified for the job I do—I dropped out of university and worked as a barman for several years until I taught myself HTML (the rest is history)
- I played the violin from the age of seven, and was leading the city youth orchestra at 18, but I haven’t picked it up since
- I once crossed the US on a Greyhound bus—New York to San Francisco in three days, via Chicago, Omaha and Salt Lake City
- I’m addicted to American teen fiction, and used to re-read Judy Blume and similar angsty stuff regularly
- For a few years in my early teens I was heavily into role-playing and table-top gaming (Warhammer, for anyone in the know), and still occasionally leaf through White Dwarf for nostalgia’s sake
- I’m a born maven; once I find something I like, I can’t help but evangelise to anyone who will listen
- I love musicals, anything from seventies classics like Jesus Chris Superstar and Hair to West Side Story and Cats—in fact I’m a big fan of most of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s early output
- I have a photographic memory and near-perfect sense of direction, but for some reason I’m completely useless at remembering faces
Tagging…
...nobody. Everyone I would have tagged has either already done it or wouldn’t be interested. Meme killah.

The Great Global Number Meme
Ladies and gentlemen, a photo meme with a difference.
The Rules
Each person who is tagged must take and post a photo (to Flickr or elsewhere) that follows on in numerical order from the previous one—and the number that is pictured must have a real connection to the photographer. So whether that means it is your house number, a building you walk past every day, your favourite track on your favourite album, or your kid’s football shirt, each participant should also post the story behind the number. They should also summarise the rules and tag another five people to do the next number.

Five things
Filed under Memes, Personal on 21.12.06
I’ve been tagged with the five things meme by Mel; I’m never one to pass up the opportunity for an easy entry requiring no actual thought, so here goes.
Five things you (probably) didn’t know about Matthew Pennell
- I played the violin between the ages of 7 and 18, culminating in leading the city orchestra and being presented with the yearly prize for best young musician
- I once slept under a hedge by a railway line in New Jersey when penniless, after being chased by a street gang
- I got Ruth Maddoc drunk at a Christmas party where I was working the bar
- I used to live with UK telly star and advertising eye-candy Cordelia Bugeja, back when she began to get famous on Channel 5
- I’m painfully shy, but rely on bullish arrogance to give the impression of being fairly well-balanced on average ;)
Five other people I’m tagging
Pete, Vero, Walker, Derek and Paul.

Your favourite sites A-Z
Filed under Memes, Internet on 18.09.06
Here’s a fun meme for a Monday morning – in your day-to-day browser of choice (which in my case is Firefox), which site is auto-suggested when you start typing each letter of the alphabet in the address bar?
Here’s my list at the moment:
- A is for my hosting admin panel
- B is for the fan forum for my favourite author
- C is for the backend of a recent client project
- D is for my del.icio.us
- E is for eBay
- F is for Flickr
- G is for the Refresh Cambridge Google Group
- H is for Jon Hicks’ recent post about microformats (not sure why, I’m sure I only read it once)
- I is for Google Image Search
- J is for a non-existent Blogger – no idea what that’s about
- K is for Kev Leitch
- L is for localhost, specifically my /experiments folder where all my ‘I wonder if that would work’ stuff goes
- M is for my personal webmail
- N is for my Newsgator account
- O is for Ofsted (I was looking up the latest report on our village school)
- P is for Position Is Everything and their article on running multiple versions of Internet Explorer
- Q is for QuirksBlog – PPK on IE memory leaks
- R is for the Refresh Cambridge Mint stats
- S is for SurFTP – the firewall at work prevents FTP clients from working, so this is the only way I can get at files on my server
- T is for the backend of this site
- U is for urban75 – my favourite forums on the interweb
- V is for the W3C validator
- W is for more webmail
- X is for an XHTML to PDF class that I’ve been playing with on a recent project
- Y is for YouTube
- Z is for ZeFrank (again, I only looked at this once – I guess I don’t visit very many sites that start with Z)
What are your A to Z of most-visited sites?

Meme: What does your bookshelf say about you?
Starting a meme – can I sink any lower? Here’s the idea; take a photo of one of your bookshelfs, upload it to Flickr and add notes explaining what particular books/other items mean to you. Yeah, we all love knowing personal stuff about each other.
