Ungoogled

Nov 20 2004

Like I would imagine many other bloggers, I keep an eye on my site stats. Not very often, only every five minutes or so. Ahem.

Aside from the number of hits and visitors, one of the more interesting bits of captured information (and one that would be of great importance if I was making any money off the site) are the search terms that people use to find the site. And the surprising thing, to me at any rate, is that hardly anybody finds the site by searching for me – that is, by typing my name into their search engine of choice.

Now, it’s not that I’m surprised because I think that more people should be taking an interest in me, goddammit! – but more that I know that I am always using Google to search for old school classmates, work colleagues, passing acquaintances, ex-bandmates, friends I’ve not seen for a while, or indeed anyone whose name crosses my path when I’ve got some time to kill.

I guess I’m just surprised that more people aren’t like that, particularly since they know what I do for a living; it’s almost a foreign concept to me – why wouldn’t you look up someone you’ve only just met on the internet?

My name always get searched on Google by friends who are too lazy to remember my website address. Of course, they aren’t long-lost friends or anything; I talk to them all the time, so I guess it doesn’t count.
