Own your asswipeness

Feb 04 2005

Finally, after very nearly a month of “Bandwidth Exceeded” messages (and the occasional “Unsuitable Content” when I was at work) I managed to get to the 2005 Bloggies site, and now I have about a thousand windows open that I don’t have time to read.

The best thing I’ve found so far is How To Blog By Tony Pierce:

remember: nobody cares which N*Sync member you are, what State you are, which Party of Five kid you are, or which Weezer song you are. the second you put one of those things on your blog you need to delete your blog and try out for the marching band. similarly, nobody gives a shit what the weather is like in your town, nobody wants you to change their cursor into a butterfly, nobody wants to vote on whether your blog is hot or not, and nobody gives a rat ass what song youre listening to.

Oops.

Anyways, the redesign is coming on quite well (which reminds me, I really should get on with completing the Designing The Blog series) – here’s a little preview:

Thanks to some tips from Tommy at Autistic Cuckoo I’ve achieved the fluid/elastic/fixed combination I was trying for. Don’t hold your breath for a launch date, though.

If that sounds like I’m taking myself too seriously, just console yourself with the thought that it could be much worse – Hugh Macleod recently said:

We have gone beyond the tipping point. We are not blogging because it’s cool or hip. It’s now mostly about survival. We have entered an age where anyone who wants to make a living above minimum wage will have to get used to the idea of building and owning their own “global microbrand”. If you’re not blogging already, I would start. Seriously.

He might have a point – there are 40,000 new blogs being started every day. Are you ONE OF US..?
