The iPod of self-consciousness

Dec 03 2005

I am inordinately happy with my new iPod Shuffle – definitely the best thing my wife has ever given me (well, unless you count the children, but they need even more frequent recharging than the iPod) – and I am frequently rediscovering obscure album tracks that I had all but forgotten. Who would have guessed that The Prodigy, Megadeth, John Denver, Tori Amos and Mauro Picotto went so well together? It’s like carrying the best radio station around with you, just without the inane presenters.

Unfortunately I have also discovered an unfortunate side-effect of listening to personal MP3 players at work – the curse of chronic self-consciousness.

As soon as those white earbuds go in, my mind immediately goes into hyper-sensitive overdrive; with every bodily activity amplified a thousand times.

Did I just swallow really grossly?

Did my throat do that weird croaking thing?

Is my nose whistling when I breathe?

Am I chewing too loud?

Perhaps it’s none of those; probably just the air-drumming that’s making my colleagues look at me that way…

I too suffer from said phenomenon. Either that or we are both paranoid….

Prodigy – Voodoo People (Pendulum Remix) ;D

Also, I’m not self conscious like that, but I do tend to feel like I’m unworthy because it probably makes people think that I didn’t have enough money to get a “real” iPod. In fact, I got it for free. I’m contemplating writing on it with a sharpie and say “THIS WAS FREE.”
