New Job

May 16 2006

Today marked a milestone in my professional life, for today I started the first job where I was hired on the basis of my design skills and knowledge; an important step in a career that to date I have largely fallen into.

Sure, I have moved from one senior design position to another, but that important difference – the validation of years of learning and practice, by a company that places real value on the role of design in the development process – makes it all worthwhile.

New kit

Apple Mac G5

Along with the new job comes a new workstation, and this is perhaps even more of a change. Getting to grips with a Mac G5 and 23” Apple monitor after being exclusively PC-based would, I thought, be quite a challenge; but after only one day (most of which was spent removing the detritus left by the previous owner) I’m already feeling quite comfortable with the new OS, and looking forward to discovering the intricacies of iCal, Dashboard and all those other apps that Apple fanboys like to rave about so much…

Hey man, that was no detritus, that was some damn fine hard drive lint! Old trial apps, forgotten documents, poorly cropped photos…it’s gold!

Say hello to the team for me.

Mathew: Don’t worry, it’s all archived in case you ever need 2-year-old download files – there was also a strange cat wallpaper that crashed the machine every time it was changed, but they tell me that was nothing to do with you. ;) Nick’s got a load of installation CDs that are yours too, if you want them back.

Natalie: Thanks. :)

Congrats Mathew. This just makes things even more confusing however. I get the occasional email from both you and Mathew, and, well, I get easily confused. So I always though “right, is it Matt that worked at activehotels?”

And on the mac fan boyness, can we expect posts about the discovery of textmate and the like over the coming months?

Congratulations, and good luck in the new job. I’m on the verge of Mac-ness, it would be good to hear how you’re getting on…

Gareth: Possibly, although at the moment it’s more likely to be cursing Mail for not being as intuitive (i.e. I’m not used to it) as Outlook…

Congrats man. I’d love to see your new rig setup in your new office. You should also tell them that in addition to design, you make one heck of a watch.

Thanks, Nathan – I may take the camera in one day and Flickr it; apart from my new desk, there’s quite a bit of photogenic architecture on the walk through Cambridge.

@Gareth – it’s easy to tell the difference! From this site we learn about Matthew:

“he’s 31, tall and skinny, married, and is employed as a Senior Web Designer”

whereas I am 29, tall and skinny, married, and formerly employed as a Senior Web Designer.

Problem solved! Oh, and he spells Mathew with a superflous ‘t’ :)

I may spell ‘Matthew’ wrong, but at least I can spell ‘superfluous’... ;)

Bah – you just use a redundant ‘u’ in that word too.. :)

Again late to the party but congrats, sounds like a great move. And the job sounds good too ;) I am a new Apple fanboy too.
Seriously though, good luck and hope all goes well as I am sure it will.
