Comment spam
I was hit by over 30 comment spam in the last day or so, so I’ve upgraded to Textpattern 4.0.3 and installed a couple of anti-spam filters:
My preliminary testing seems to indicate that they don’t work, but this might be because I am cookied as the site owner – anyway, if you see anything weird going on with the site, let me know.

Yep, I was getting over a hundred comments/day on one post about spam and blue frog, titled the same as one of spam emails I’ve received. That seems to attract the spam bots a lot. Akismet doesn’t seem to work very well lately, so I disabled comments on that particular post. Annoying, they are.

I disable comments on any old posts that are attracting spam, but some more popular ones still get legitimate comments, so I don’t want block all comments.
I only had 2 today, so perhaps my changes have worked…

I’m sorry they’re not working! Could it be conflicting with another plugin? I think when I was building the plugin the devs told me that there can be conflicts with plugins that bypass the preview. Something about bypassing the preview also bypassing the plugin. I could be wrong tho. Send me a note if you continue to have problems and need a hand.

Hi Brian – yes, I think it is to do with my having comment preview disabled (I hadn’t picked up that they wouldn’t work together from your plugin article). When I’ve got the time I’ll replace the preview functionality and see if that makes any difference.

I’m getting far more spam than usual these last few days as well – must be the school holidays.
