BarCamp London - Day One

Sep 03 2006

The first day of BarCampLondon is over (kind of – there are still many conversations, mashup sessions and weird games that will probably go on into the night), so it seems like a good time to jot down some thoughts and notes from Day 1.

It’s always nice to be greeted with free stuff at a conference, and BarCamp trumps @media’s bags and pens with 3 t-shirts (provided by the event sponsors – backstage.bbc.co.uk and eBay) and free network cables (although I’m not sure if we’re allowed to take them home or not).

Sessions

Some notes I managed to get down during a couple of sessions before my under-charged laptop battery gave out:

Mike ‘Isofarro’ Davies on automated accessibility:

...[making our site accessible] improved search traffic by 30%, reduced task completion times by 30%, reduced the cost of maintenance by half and doubled conversion rates…

Dan Webb showed us some new bits and pieces he has added to Prototype – you can check out what he is calling ‘Low Pro’ on his site.

Aral Balkan enthused about agile development, including the observation that “business requirements are fully specified, commercial outcomes have clear success metrics, but usability is just ‘implicitly assumed’ – there is no time, effort or budget allocated for usability, it is just assumed that it will be included”. He also mentioned an item on his site that deserves a look later – 10 Usability Design Principles.

Evening

Lots (and lots) of free pizza and free beer was on hand for the evening, lubricating a handful of spontaneous mashups. Me? I was up at 6am and I’m knackered…
