Mac Gaming: Battlefield 2142 on Mac OS X

Feb 21 2008

Since Christmas I have been the proud owner of a brand new, maxed-out, 24” iMac as my home machine (since the unfortunate demise of my old PC’s motherboard).

One of the facts to which I had resigned myself was that my PC gaming days were over—everyone knows that there are no decent games for the Mac, and anyway, I had a lovely Wii to satisfy my needs in that area—but one day my idle browsing of the Apple Store led me to the Action Games section and the treasures within… and, 3-5 days later, a copy of Battlefield 2142 landed on the mat.

Bracka-bracka-bracka

Perhaps I should add a disclaimer that I have 8GB of RAM in my machine, but the game looks and feels great. It’s been a while since I’ve played a decent first-person shooter, but BF2142 is a really immersive experience. Add the fact that its core strength is the online multiplayer element, where two teams of up to 32 players each fight for overall control of large and varied maps, and you can easily waste hours at a time racking up points and opening new player mods and equipment. (That’s where the game gets you, by the way—you can only gain access to better weapons and equipment through experience, which means hours playing online. The single player offline game is great fun too, but you can’t beat the thrill of killing real pretend people.)

The variety of vehicles was also new to my gaming experience. Aside from the odd jeep ride in FarCry, FPS was mostly walking around and shooting, or running around and shooting; BF2142 offers a variety of jeeps, tanks and helicopters to drive around the battlefield, plus the awesome Battle Walker robots. The variety in gameplay is also augmented by some of the game servers, where particular teams or clans enforce strict “knives only” or “sniper only” rules, creating an entirely different flavour of game.

Do you play?

So, does anyone else play (Mac or PC)? Leave a comment or add me to your friends list. Here’s my profile—I’m usually online weekends after 8pm GMT.

As well as the Apple Store, you can also buy Battlefield 2142 for Mac OS X from Amazon.com (but not .co.uk, oddly).
