Conversation with my daughter, aged 5
A: What’s that book about, Daddy? Can I read it?
Me: It’s called American Gods, darling—it’s about a man who meets a lot of gods and travels around America.
A: We learn about God at my after-school club!
Me: There are lots of gods in this book, though. They’re old gods, from a long time ago.
A: (thoughtful pause) I think we must learn about the new God.

Ah yes, you can’t beat a bit of Conan. They’re selling the complete Raymond E Feist series of Conan books as one enormo-volume here in the UK—very tempting…

I read American Gods last summer, and thoroughly enjoyed it. I’ve passed it on since to 2 other people, who have also enjoyed it. Great book, and its important to get away from strictly “business” reading sometimes. Late Feb, I was feeling sick of work and wanted to just go sit in the den with a book – so I raided my bookshelf for something… anything… I hadn’t read yet, and its littered with “PHP this” and “Zen that”, but little escapist fiction. Just let me say, thank goodness for Conan the Barbarian – not everyone’s cup of tea, but great pulp fiction and PURE escapism!
